At last, I’ve got my hands on this little device. When I’ve first heard of it and how much it costs, I thought I would never be interested, but after hearing it at a headphone meeting organised by avstore, I felt the need for deeper impressions and I am really glad I have the chance to review it.

I knew that Chord made only exemplary products as I have listened to some of their products, for example their QBD76 DAC, which really impressed me with it’s marvelous sound and build quality.

When I am saying it has good build quality, I want to express that a tank could go over it without breaking it. No….literally, a tank did go over it without breaking it:

General Description

But let’s get back to Hugo. This is their latest release and it is basically a portable DAC / headphone amp.  Hugo is  based on powerful Xilinx Spartan VI FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) board that has a very very low and impressive THD + Noise that goes to -140dB being one of the quietest I know (after MSB with -144dB) . So it doesn’t have a normal DAC module inside, as the FPGA does the conversion too, which I consider to be a plus.

Chord Hugo - Review 3

Actually this is the most advanced processor they have released until now, having a 26K tap-length filter. That is more than double compared to the one they used in their Chord QuteHD Dac, and even more than their marvelous QBD76 that “only” has 17k.

The highest the tap-length is, the closest is gets to mathematical precision.

This little guy knows how to play everything (even on usb) ranging from 44.1KH to 384kHz(PCM) and 32 bit. In addition it can also process DSD128. It also has a very interesting feature, the A2DP Bluetooth that uses a custom-made module with the aptX codec to feed the digital signal directly into the dac circuitry. Will get back to this later.

You can use Hugo as a DAC from any iPhone, iPad or Android device.

Hugo has a built-in battery-charging circuit, with a full charge reached in approximately two hours. Hugo takes no power over its USB input (as this is severely limited with many partnering products) and only takes signal data, therefore, it is fully compatible with all iPhone, iPad and Android devices. Further features include an advanced reference-grade digital volume control that does not lose bits and changes colour with volume changes.

The build quality is typical to chord. It’s case is made from aircraft grade aluminium.

Technical Specs :

• Advanced digital volume control
• Crossfeed filter network
• Battery powered for approximately 14 hours operation
• Input, sample rate and volume level indication by colour-change LEDs
• 26K tap-length filter (more than double when compared to the QuteHD DAC)
• Headphone output: 110dB SPL into a 300ohm headphone load
• Output power – 1KHz 1V sinewave both channels driven 0.1% distortion
• 600 ohms 35mW
• 300 ohms 70mW
• 56 ohms 320mW
• 32 ohms 600mW
• 8 ohms 720mW
• THD – 1KHz 3V output: 0.0005%
• Dynamic Range: 120dB
• Output impedance: 0.075 ohms
• Damping factor >100
• Weight: 0.4kg
• Dimensions: 100x20x132mm (WxHxD)

Drivers

• On a PC (Vista, Win 7 or 8) Hugo will playback music up to 384KHz and support both DSD64 and DSD128, but for this you must install the supplied driver which comes in the box and is also available on this product page.

• On Apple Mac OS, iOS for iPhone/iPad and Android, no drivers are required and Hugo will work up to 384KHz and DSD64/128 if your playback software/app can support it.

Hugo has 4 Inputs:

• Optical TOSLink 24-bit/192kHz-capable
• RCA coaxial input 24-bit/384kHz-capable
• Driverless USB input 16-bit/48kHz-capable (designed for tablets/phones)
• HD USB input 32-bit/384KHz and DSD128-capable (for computer/laptop playback; see driver details below)

Chord Electronics Hugo

It also has 4 outputs:

• 2 x 3.5mm headphone jacks
• 1 x 6.35mm (1/4 inch) headphone jack
• 1 x (pair) stereo RCA phono output

Chord Hugo Review 1

The first picture shows that it has two buttons. Well, those are “menu” buttons. The left one is for choosing the input and the right one is for different cross-feed levels.

When you press each one of them, a small led light will change inside Hugo, the color depending on the selected input or cross-feed level.

So, yes, it has cross-feed that may help some users that like this feature.

I never use cross-feed with any device, as I think it takes away from transients, dynamics and details.

Hugo can be used as a standalone DAC, and for that you have to press the cross-feed button while you turn it on to stabilize the volume at a default 2V output.

While the build quality is top notch, there are some stuff that could have been done better. The buttons are very small and sometimes not so easy to press, especially the power button, when you have both power and usb cables inserted.

The package in which Hugo comes, could be much better.  I’ve seen much cheaper products with much better packaging. After getting it out, the box and what is inside is like lego, being very hard to put it back in the box.

As John Franks, the owner of Chord Electronics stated in the first reply of this review, the package has been redesigned, so the new owners of Hugo will benefit from it.

Even if it comes with a normal micro  – A usb cable, it would have been nice if it also had a micro-micro cable for tablet / phone use.

Listening Experience

The tests have been done with Decware Taboo MK3, Audeze LCD-X with Toxic Silver Widow, Burson Conductor, Audiobyte Hydra-X, Sennheiser HD800, Focal Spirit Classic, Focal Spirit One.

I have tested Hugo as a portable unit as well, but my main goal was it’s DAC section.

I was first impressed by it at a headphone meeting hold by avstore, while listening to LCD-3. I must say that they sounded really good from a portable amp this size and with those power specs. I’ve also tested it with HD800 and LCD-X and both sounded  good with it. They could use more power, but the sound was clean, detailed and enjoyable.

The other headphones like the Focals presented no problem to Hugo.

So the amplifier is excellent with portable headphones and enjoyable even with the big boys.

One very interesting feature was the bluetooth input. I was very skeptical about it, but it managed to impress me. Things went incredibly smooth from a user experience perspective. Just had to select the bluetooth input, turn the bluetooth on on my phone, scan for a new device on my Galaxy S4 and pair with Hugo. Went to winamp app and pressed the play button. Well that was it.

Besides the very straight forward experience, the sound quality was very very good, much more than I expected from the bluetooth input. It wasn’t on the same level as the usb input, but it was still very enjoyable.

Now let’s go to the hd usb – coax inputs. I’ve tested it with Hydra-X on the coax input vs the hd usb input.  I used the stock usb cable, as I didn’t have an audiophile micro usb cable.

While trying to insert the coax cable into chord, I noticed it didn’t fit as the input was too narrow, so I had to use another coax cable (the stock one that comes with Conductor).

However, Chord may change this in the future:

[Editor’s note. Chord responded to this issue with the following: “Chord Electronics prides itself on the use of a high-quality local company for its casework. Our casework is ordered in very small batches and having the metalwork supplier within five miles of the Chord factory, gives us extraordinary control over production and quality, and gives us the ability to make immediate changes. Therefore, we will be making some minor modifications to Hugo to allow for the larger RCA cables associated with high-quality home-use applications.”]

While at first, on electronic music I thought the coax input with hydra is better than the hd usb input, as it had more bass that went deeper, on classical music I observed that the usb input had better details, speed, transients, dynamics, soundstage &  imaging and precision.

So the USB input is excellent by it’s own and has no need of an external interface to get the most out of it, as burson conductor does .

What interested me most in Hugo was it’s dac section so the most important tests were done for this purpose with Taboo and Conductor as amps.

Let’s get into some songs for some deeper impressions.

The links that I am giving here may not be the exact interpretation or quality with what I really tested.

Chesky Vivaldi – Allegro ( La Caccia )

The presentation was incredible and very airy. The instrument separation and clarity was top notch. The violins and all instruments had a precise location and very good impact with exploding and tactile transients. The experience was so nice, that I got goosebumps. Ok, so the journey with Hugo started well, as it is goosebumps level 😀

Silent Strike – Asian Paper Circus

The control of the bass, the punch and details is amazing. The sound effects were coming out of nowhere with incredible speed and separation. The soundstage is incredibly spacious and holographic. The sound was so transparent that is just you and the music.

Pink Martini – White Christmas

“I’m dreaming of a silver hugo…” The voice has an incredible texture and timbre. It was also very holographic as I could “hear” the room. The part II came with an excellent chorus that was extremely well separated from the very tactile and sparkly instruments.

Rod Stewart – Winter Wonderland

The control, punch and speed of the bass is amazing. The voices were just incredible with a very good timbre and presence. The instruments were playing throughout the song from layer to layer in a very precise location, presenting excellent imaging.

I just felt the need to close my eyes and just listen.

Infected Mushroom – Noon

Hugo is amazing. It left me speechless. The bass is one of the best I have ever heard. It has an incredible level of detail, control, punch and depth.  The precision is really hard to describe. When I close my eyes I can see the sounds coming with incredible accuracy and speed from a pitch black background.

Mozart – The Marriage of Figaro

Every instrument had a full life of it’s own and could be easily heard, even if it was in the last layer, showing impeccable dynamics and microdynamics with an impressive level of details.

Zdob si Zdub – Miorita

Can Hugo rock? Yes it can? But can it ethno-rock? Well it sure can. The presentation was again very transparent with exploding transients and energy that puts you in a dance mood.

Leonard Cohen – Lady Midnight

The scene was very spacious again with an excellent layering and precision. Young Leonard’s Voice is very transparent and clean with an excellent natural timbre. The guitar gave me goosebumps again as it was like it was there near my ear with incredible presence & transients that gave a very notable pluck and a wonderful extension.

Chord Hugo Review

Summary

Bass

Hugo has one of the best bass I have ever heard in a dac. The control and precision are incredible, followed by the wonderful depth and punch. One word “Excellent“! This word applies to everything bellow, but I won’t repeat myself.

Mids & Treble

Both are top notch. The midrange is very rich with very present, detailed and tactile instruments and amazing voices that have excellent texture, natural timbre and feel. The treble is very well extended without being bright or unnatural.

Neutral & Natural

The presentation is very natural and neutral and  it doesn’t bring by force anything  in front. Actually this is the third non-delta sigma dac, or actually without a normal dedicated delta sigma chip as Sabre32, Wolfson, etc, that proves my theory that these kind of dacs usually sound more natural and lack the digital touch as the others have.

Transparency

With it it’s just you and the music. You can close your eyes and merge yourself into your favourite songs.

Details

The level of detail is amazing. Don’t get scared because of this. Many dacs  that are very detailed tend to become analytically, loosing from the musicality, but this is not the case. The details come very natural and it reminds me of Analog Dac.

Dynamics

This DAC has one of the best dynamics and microdynamics I’ve ever heard. I can hear the air  being displaced by the conductor’s hands, while the instruments in the back are still very present and alive.

Conclusions

When I think of Hugo, only superlatives come in my mind and I can hardly restrain myself from writing “WOW, Amazing, Excellent, Incredible”, etc.

This small but wonderful DAC became a reference for me and I must congratulate Chord Electronics on this excellent new product.

While I started with the thought that it is very expensive and it may be overpriced, I ended up thinking it has an excellent price considering what it is offering.

This DAC has made it in the TOP of my recommendations, after MSB Analog Dac. Yes, it is that good.

When I’ve seen it, I thought that it was just made for portable use and would not compete with full sized units. While it’s amp section is “only” very good, the dac section is absolutely excellent and beats most of the full sized units I’ve reviewed.

Don’t get me wrong, the amplifier in Hugo is very clean and offers very transparent sound. However with power hungry headphones I feel like I am missing some energy, impact, control compared to the big guys, but it still offers very good transparency and details.

For example even if Conductor’s DAC cheats with a better usb interface (the Hydra-X), it is still quite below Hugo.

It is astonishing what Chord managed to do with this product and at this size.

You can use it as your main DAC in your full size system without any problem.

There are few products that actually inspire you while writing the review and Hugo was one of them. It was a pleasure writing the review and getting to know this little guy.

Pros

  • Incredible bass with excellent control, punch and depth, one of the best I’ve ever heard
  • Excellent mids & treble
  • Very good transparency that transposes you into your favourite songs
  • Excellent pin point precision
  • Top-notch transients with exploding attack, very fast decay and excellent extension
  • Excellent dynamics and microdynamics
  • Neutral and natural presentation
  • Good price/performance ratio
  • Very good build quality
  • Good & Very Clean headphone amplifier
  • Good Bluetooth input

Cons

  • Cheap Packaging ( from my understanding the package will be redesigned )
  • The coax input is too narrow for a lot of cables (but this may change in the future)
  • Some of the buttons are very hard to access
  • With speaker systems it might sound a little flat/bright

  1. Thank you for the wonderful review I’d just like to say I was unhappy about the original packing myself so we’ve redesigned it. It’s much better now far stronger and less fiddly. All I can say to my first Hugo customers is we are doing our very best to get the new packing design into production as soon as we can!

    1. Since the Hugo is your new reference on the digital side and the QBD76 is the more expensive model, could you say if the QBD76 will be updated to benefit from the Hugo’s advances, like the use of the Xilinx Spartan 6 for example?

      1. Helllo Adrian,

Well, it would be a natural upgrade for qbd, and I think they will do that, as I see no reason for them not to. That will be an interesting upgrade indeed.

        Cheers,

        Dan

  2. This is an unexpected honor. Thank you for the kind words and for taking your time to reply here! Happy to hear about the package (added your input in the review as well). Hugo was a pleasure to review, and is one of the few products that inspired me while writing, making the whole process of knowing it very enjoyable.

Congratulation on this product and keep up the good work!

  3. Thanks you for the great review. Could you please compare between the USB input of Hugo to Hydra-x? The Hugo’s USB input is already great but can Hydra-x can improof?

    1. Thank you.

Well as I said in the review. The coax input with hydra has smoother sound and deeper bass, but the usb input has better imaging, control, precision, speed, transients, soundstage.

      1. Looks like the internal USB interface of Hugo is very good, it’s better than Hydra-X in many aspects.
But from your description the Hydra-X’s sonic characteristic should be less fatigue. Am I right?

        Thanks for your help.

      2. No problem. You are right in both aspects.

  4. I bought this unit to use with my Home System knowing that portability was available if I wanted to take it with me. I’m absolutely thrilled with the sound of my new Chord Hugo. Unfortunately, I’m equal disgusted with the product design on the outside. I felt the layout of the inputs and outputs could have been configured differently. That’s simply a personal thing and can live with it. What frustrates me the most is two things. First, when you buy a $2,400.00 product, there is a real good probability that the user is going to be using nice cables/ interconnects. They don’t fit, really? This from a company that makes world class, high end equipment? Sure you can run a tank over the thing (assuming I leave it on the ground some place) but you can’t insert/ use a good quality RCA cable. Second, Again, when purchasing a fairly expensive piece of equipment, and they are going to include some cables, maybe they could provide something a little nicer than something I can find at my local Pharmacy store next to the batteries, ice cream & gift cards. Come on guys! I have to say, I was more pleased with first impressions when I opened my new ALO International ($599) than I was with the Hugo $2,400). The only thing keeping me from putting it up for sale is the outstanding sound quality. I would like to see Chord step up, admit they can do better, and support the early purchasers by offering to upgrade the original run Hugo’s with the new design when available. And maybe provide some nice adapters in the meantime. I’m willing to pay for ’em, if they are decent quality. Again, as far as sound goes, this is a really, really superb sounding DAC and I do recommend a listen.

    1. While it has some problems with the design and inputs, I wouldn’t be so harsh here. For one they already said they will change it, and if you get used to it, won’t be a problem after a while.

I am afraid that if they make it more user friendly…they will increase the price, and I would prefer the bulky user experience instead of the price increase :))

  5. Hi, I’m a proud owner of the HD800 and Burson Conductor. Do you think these can replace the Conductor and do they also improve the bass of the HD800 more better? OR should I just settle with the Conductor and grab these for it’s DAC?

Thank you and keep it up with the great reviews! 🙂

  6. Thank you, amcn.

Well I would buy Hugo and use it as a DAC with Conductor as amplifier. This is how I have done the tests and the combo rocks. The bass on hd800 is better indeed, as it goes deeper and it is more detailed.
The dac in hugo is much better than the dac in conductor. However, the Amplifier section in conductor is much better than the one in Hugo, so put them together and they will truly sing.

    1. Thank you for the quick response. I wish I can have both but my wallet cannot take any more damage right now lol. If you had a choice between these two which would you keep?

      1. That is a very hard choice indeed. It depends on what you need. For example I am not into portability so much. Most of my listening I do at home. While the amp in hugo is decent, it is still portable and cannot get the most out of LCD-x, hd800.

I would recommend getting the Burson Soloist and Hugo. Try to find a good second hand soloist.

        Cheers,

        Dan

  7. What RCA interconnects did you use? I just received the Hugo and it made me disappointed that it is a reference product for $2.4K usd and I can’t use my $1K interconnects??? With rca that fit, you can hear the dac trying but they are limiting. I hope Chord makes this Right for the early supporters, it is only fair. It is amazing sounding.

    Thank You
    Joe

    1. Hey Joe,

I have morrow audio rca’s . They are not stellar but they do a great job for the price. The new version of Hugo has a redesigned case that fixes this issue, but it is also 200 gbp more.

      Cheers,

      Dan

      1. Hi Dan,

Apologies, I just wanted to clarify that the original chassis is the same price as someone receiving the newer chassis. It is not a 200GBP increase for the newer chassis. At least it shouldn’t be. 🙂

        Phil

      2. Hey Phil,

I don’t know why they increased the price, but I don’t see it in a positive manner either. Wait…are you telling me that the price will not be increased? I agree it shouldn’t have been.
In Romania the price has already increased.
Maybe they realized it was too cheap for what it does and wanted to stack a little more to the price.

        Dan

  8. If I drive the LCD-x with hugo .. what I lose compared to the soloist? There is so much difference? The LCD-X has a 22 ohm impedance and is 96db efficient. At these specs, the Hugo probably puts out close to ¾ watts which is enough power to sound really good. Do you approve??

    1. While power is important that is not the most important thing, it’s the quality of that power too.And while hugo may give 700-800 mw into 22 ohms, soloist gives more than 2.4.

You get good results from Hugo, but it doesn’t compare to soloist in the amplification section.

Soloist has much better control, speed, imaging, instrument separation, details, dynamics, energy, etc

Hugo has an astonishing DAC section, incredibly good for that size or any size actually, but the amp section, while good, not quite in the league of good full sized units.

      1. I understand. What do you recommend between these two combinations? Burson Conductor SL 9018 (no hydra) + LCD-X or Hugo + LCD-X. Thank you for your help.

      2. I think I would go with Hugo + LCD-X as the DAC is incredible and you can get a better amp in time, and getting Burson Soloist (not SL, as SL is not as good as full Soloist) would be a smaller financial step afterwards than getting Hugo.

  9. I’m using Kimber Kable Hero’s with the Ultraplate RCA’s. They fit nicely & sound great with the original, first run Hugo’s

    1. That is good to know. Thank you for your input!

  10. Could you elaborate a little on the differences between the Hugo and the MSB Analog DAC? Areas where the MSB is superior to the Hugo…

    1. Unfortunately, I don’t have them side by side to do a thorough comparison.

Analog dac is still the most analog / natural sound I have ever heard from a DAC, without sacrificing details, dynamics or transparency. If I remember correctly, it is superior in any area of the sound, from dynamics, details, dynamic range, transparency, etc

  11. Hello Dan,
thanks a lot for your review (and your whole site)! Your enthusiasm is very infectious 🙂

For roughly four weeks I am very happy owner of the hugo now. It leads the hd800 to incredible highs. What a product!!!

However I think I have to disagree to your judgement that the hugo amp is inferior to other/stronger amps. I do own a Teac hd 501 which actually is a very fine device for itself. But I will have to sell it. The purity of the hugo dac/amp combi is (how should I express it?) just covered by the amp. And the 501 is actually a very transparent thing. I fall in love with that purity of the hugo/800. I can only image that anything between hugo and 800 (which is another wonderful, transparent thing) would disturb the bliss.

Maybe you have a chance to revisit the amp of the hugo once again. I would be interested what you think about the aspect of purity which I tried to describe.

Another finding in my hugo journey: this little, happy color-thing gets only better, every day. Well, you never know, is it really the device or is it just my perception and enthusiasm.

    1. Hello Roland,

Thank you for the kind words.

Regarding the amplifier, when I said it is quite in the league with the big guys is because of the lack of power , not transparency. I also think that the amplifier is very pure and transparent, but I feel like I am missing out on power hungry headphones compared to stronger amplifiers, especially impact, control and energy.

      Cheers,

      Dan

        Helo Dan,

Excellent review…Currently I’m owning Burson Conductor w/ Audeze LCD 3…Although I’m happy with its result…would you recommend to go for Chord Hugo to pair with Conductor for still better result ? Can you elaborate how to connect the Hugo with my conductor as I’m very new to this audio things

      2. Hello,

Thank you. I surely recomend the combo as Hugo has a clearly superior DAC. You just have to connect hugo and conductor with rca cables. Don’t forget to set hugo volume for dac output as i said in the review. Then you select rhe rca input in conductor.

        Cheers,

        Dan

      3. Hi Dan,

Your response caused me to give the HA501 another try. And indeed, there are pieces which benefit from it overall. You loose some transparency and you gain something ( slightly more bass/body, slightly more energy), sometimes just the little bit, which was lacking.

But it depends piece by piece what feels better in the sum.
Often the Hugo alone with the 800 is just heaven, not to top ( at least so it sounds to me).

Anyway, I will not sell my amp now 🙂
        Thanks for your fine observations.

        Cheers,
        Roland

        Dear Dan..

After reading your fantastic review I have ordered for Chord Hugo…a couple of days back I downloaded Dr.Chesky records from HDTracks whose sampling rates are 24 bit 192khz..My audio source is DX100…While I connect Ibasso with Burson Conductor via optical out to play this album I was surprised to see there is no sound coming out of my headphone(Audeze LCD3) although the music is being played in Ibasso …On the other hand while I connect it via coaxial out I get lot of ticking sounds and also some grains in the music…Could you please expalin why…?.

        Thanks and regards

Thanks for your reply…Wats your opinion about connecting Hugo with JH16….?

    1. No problem. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the pleasure of listening to them, so I can only presume. I don’t see why they shouldn’t go well with each other.

Hi,An excellent review, thanks.I’m planning to buy Shure 846’s,and getting ACS custom molds.I use my MacBook Pro with my CD collection ripped to
ALAC,paired with Senn IE80s,an NJC Monitor I for the amp section, and a Dragonfly for the DAC.This budget system actually gives really good results.I’m interested in getting a seriously good amp/dac to go with the Shures, the Hugo is definitely in the frame. The portability aspect doesn’t really interest me,I’d use it hooked up with my laptop and always with the Shures.I prefer IEMS to full size ‘phones for many reasons. The output of
the amp will not be an issue, the Shures are really easy to drive.I have a few questions. Is it possible to keep the Hugo running off mains power
permanently? How does the Hugo compare with the Naim Dac V1?Sorry for even asking, but it’s another one in the frame.Do you have an opinion on ALAC vs WAV files? Naim recommend WAV,and a chap in a decent audio store in Oxford was emphatic about ripping to WAV using error correction.I’ve been very careful over the years to buy best quality CDs,Japanese, etc.,quite a few are DSD.I imagine I’d need to download Pure Audio, the files would be stored in DSD and then recognised as such by the Hugo? The whole computer audio concept is relatively new to me,but
one I’m eager to embrace! Many thanks for your time.Regards,Chris..

    1. Hello,

Thank you Chris. I am not sure what you mean by keeping hugo running on mains power, but if you are referring to bypassing the battery, no you cannot. Hugo is quite better than Naim V1, especially as dac, but I think the amp too. I use flacs and any other high resolution files. If Chord says wavs are better for Hugo, maybe they know best 🙂 . Hugo should support any format out there if I remember correctly.

      Cheers,

Thanks Dan for coming back to me so quickly.I’ve a feeling the battery on the Hugo “trickle charges”.and the unit feeds of that.An interesting, and to
my mind, interesting link is as follows http://forums.naimaudio.com/topic/chord-hugo-vs-naim-nds .There are hard core Naim devotees saying that
that the Hugo far exceeds top of the the range Naim gear. Thanks again,Chris..

      2. Hey Chris,

No problem. Well, I wasn’t talking about the top of the line naim dacs as I haven’t even heard them yet, just about dac v1 and hugo 🙂

Hi Dan again,The general gist of the Naim Forum.is that the Hugo at £1400 far exceeds the performance of the top of the range Naim gear.I very
much relate to this as someone who began their audio journey many years ago, when the natural progression was from Technics to Quad to Naim.
I’m quite sure I will go with the Hugo. It’ll be absolutely fine for me.Many thanks.Chris,,

      4. Hi Chris,

Aa, ok I get it now. Well… I felt that Hugo was ahead of dacs that ware even 3 times the price in some cases.

It is an excellent product indeed. I am curious how the next top of the line dac from Chord will sound based on Hugo’s tech.

        Cheers,

        Dan

    2. You may want to consider replacing your DragonFly with the ALO Key. 32 bit/ 384k. Really nice & portable and sounds great with my Shure 425’s. I also have a Hugo for home use only.

      1. I’ve been told that the next release from Chord will be the new, revamped QB76 (not sure about the model number) but in comparison, the Hugo has something like 26K tap-length filter (more than double when compared to the QuteHD DAC) and the new Q will quadruple that in addition to all the other existing Hugo features. Plan to invest $8k-$9k. $$$$ but very very nice!

    Venkatesh

    1. Hello Venkatesh,

Is this related to Chord Hugo or just Ibasso and Conductor? If it is not related to chord, please contact me directly from the contact page and we shall move this discussion to private.

      Thank you,

      Dan

      1. Hey , do you know maybe where I can find the Hugo dac in NYC?

  15. I don’t live in NYC, Indianapolis, IN but I am considering to sell my Hugo. It’s the latest version with newest power supply and updated case. I also have an Audioplilleo AP2 SE (special request) with upgraded power supply to get 32bit/ 384k resolution. If interested, reply to this post with your contact info and we can discuss offline.

  16. Please be advised that the HUGO does not use the FPGA for digital conversion functions. That, is fact. It uses logic circuits and various flip flops for the job, the FPGA is for the filter functions. Thanks for hearing me out.

    1. Thank you for the heads up, Andrew!

  17. Thank you so much for your thoughtful and thorough review! Quick question for you. You mention that the LCD-X would do better with a more powerful amp than that of Hugo. Should one conclude then that the Hugo would find it even more challenging to generate good sound on the LCD-3s (Fazor)? Did you happen to spend enough time with the LCD-3s on the Hugo to conclude whether they or the LCD-Xs had the best chemistry with the Hugo? The reason I ask is that while I am going to purchase the Hugo, I’m undecided on which AUDEZE headphones I will purchase. Since I listen mostly to Jazz, Vocals, Blues I have a feeling that the LCD-3s may be the better choice but this may not be true if the Hugo doesn’t have the muscle required to drive them well or if the LCD-X, with their high efficiency, would be a better match.

    Much appreciated,

    Battles

    1. Thank you, Blake. LCD-3 was ok with Hugo too, however LCD-X is more efficient than 3.

I’ve listened to the LCD-3 (fazor) recently and I must say that I liked them more than LCD_X, overall.

So lcd-3 were quite ok on Hugo too. You could buy them and then in a while add an external amplifier to Hugo. It’s an easier upgrade than from going from X to 3.

      Cheers,

      Dan

      1. Thanks Dan. When you say add a “DAC to the Hugo” do you mean an external amp? If so, what might you recommend for a portable/travel amp as well as a desktop amp? Thanks again!

      2. No problem. Sorry for the mistake I was rushing. Update my post. I was indeed referring to an external amplifier.

I can’t think of a portable amplifier that can go with hugo and be used as desktop amp in the same time. Hmm….actually Ifi Micro IDSD would be a great amp for that.

It also has a good dac that is not quite hugo level, but not so far away.

        Cheers,

        Dan

      3. Hi Dan,

Thanks for your advice. What I meant to ask is if you were to purchase two separate amps, one for portable use and one for desktop use, what two amps might you choose that would pair best with the Hugo cost no object (within reason)?

        Much appreciated,

        Battles

      4. Hey Battles,

Well, for a desktop amp I would definitely go with Audio GD Master 9 or the newer HE-9. For portable, I would go with Micro Ifi IDSD.

M9 is the best amp I’ve heard and tested until now, and Idsd has a great and versatile amp that worked great with iems and full sized headphones as well. For a desktop amp I would also look at the new Schiit Ragnarok, which I didn’t have the pleasure of hearing yet, but read only good things about it.

        Cheers,

        Dan

  18. Thanks! Just so I am a 100% clear, for a portable system to drive the LCD3s, do you still recommend using the DAC of the Hugo? Or are you suggesting using the DAC/amp of the Micro Ifi IDSD for my portable system. For what it is worth, I already own an AK240, but have heard that the Hugo would do a much better job powering the LCD3s. Thanks for your patience!

    1. Hugo is good on it’s own for amp too. You shouldn’t have problem in powering LCD-3. Just suggesting that the one in IDSD might get more out of it. Idsd has a good dac too but not quite as good as hugo.

  19. Hi Dan, thanks for the review. I own the LCD 2.2 and Conductor and need to ask a stupid question 🙂

To bypass the Conductor DAC, I need to do nothing more than connect the Hugo (via RCA) to the Conductor inputs right? The Burson will automatically bypass its own DAC section?

    1. Hey RDH,

      Thank you 🙂
You are correct, but you have to select the input as well. It has 2 rca inputs if I remember correctly (I and II). Conductor’s DAC works on the USB and Coax input.

      Cheers,

      Dan

      1. Thanks buddy :¬)

    Hello!

Do you consider that hugo is enough of an amp to drive hd800, or do i need another amp?
    what about the lcd3?

    Thanks,

    -George.

    1. Hello George,

I have heard both HD800 and LCD-3 with Hugo. Both sound good with Hugo. However, they would benefit for a better amp.

Can’t wait to hear the desktop variant of Hugo.

      Cheers,

      Dan

Hi, I’ve purchased Hugo back in November, and while the sound is really great, after few months the HD USB port started to malfunction (first unrecognizable on my Sony XPeria Z2 Andoid phone, then also Windows 7 on desktop systems); It was after 1-2 weeks when I’ve noticed that the HD USB port was phisically in a kind of a fragile condition (easily bending when connecting the cable), but I thought it will “hold its ground”; Fortunatelly, avstore.ro, our Chord reseller in RO, accepted the device to be repaired in warranty.

  22. I have had the Hugo for more than a year now and am very, very happy with it. To me it even has enough power to drive my new MrSpeakers Alpha Prime headphones. I discovered that for my home system the output doesn’t matter much, both the RCA jacks and the 3.5 mm jack provide outstanding quality. I also had to get it repaired but not for the usb, which seems very tight and sturdy, but for the RCA jacks. The reseller said I had opened it, but I just take it with me to work about three or four times a week. That means disconnecting all connectors almost twice a day.

I really, really love the sound. I have discovered that bitperfect audio players give the most shine and sparkle to the sound. On Mac I like Vox a lot and on windows I use both foobar2000 and Kodi. Kodi required to turn of replay gain. For my phone I use USBPlayer exclusively.

This weekend I hope to listen to a Metrum Pavane which uses the No OverSampling principle. I hope also to listen to some tube amps but am highly doubtful if they work their magic for all kinds of music. I have a broad range of music I listen to and have selected my components carefully to be able to play everything I like.

The only way I can think of the Hugo to sound lean on a full size speaker system is if either the player does something to the signal or the amplification is not up to the task.

  23. I am using my Hugo fed from a rega Apollo CD, Black Cat Silver Co Ax cable, Cord Cobra RCA to Naim Din fed into Naim Nac112X Pre, Naim Nap150X, Mk1 Flat Cap Power suply, Nac A5 Speaker cable, Naim Intro Mk1 loudspeakers. Headphones are B&W P7s.

Its one hell of a system! All Naim gear 2nd hand.

The Hugo is Wonderful! Not played any Vinyl since it got it!

    Thanks for the review.

Did you get a chance to compare Hugo against Mojo?. Seems like both sounding similar as per lot of reviews I have read.

I want to know if Mojo or Hugo can play AKG K812 to its maximum potential? Some reviews suggest Burson Conductor is a good match for AKG K812 and wondering if Mojo could match or better Burson Conductor SL 9018 and if Mojo / Hugo is better would you be able to say in % terms how better (ignore the price difference). I have a Burson with me so I am thinking if going with Mojo is better (I like the idea of portability but decision should be pure on SQ)

    1. Hello. I didn’t have the chance to listen to Mojo yet. When I do, I will surely post my impressions! Been really busy lately. Can’t wait to make some time to get more stuff to review. I have lots on my list!

  25. Salutare Dan, intre HUGO si MONN 300D V2, ce mi-ai recomanda ? Multumesc

    1. Cred ca as merge pe chord, chiar si mojo.
