You remember FiiO X3, right ? Well, FiiO shipped yet another great product on the market, the FiiO X5,  X3’s big brother.

I always loved the products from this company as they really have a very good price/performance ratio.

FiiO released some excellent products, especially for the price, during the last few years, filling a part of the market that was previously kind of empty. While the products were excellent for the price, I cannot say any of them were WOW material.

Well, with X5 they made their way into this category as well.

FiiO X5 Review 2

From the first moment I’ve seen it I loved it more than X3. It really looks better, with a more appealing design and better build quality.

The enclosure is a lot more sturdy and thicker than the one of X3. Also the finish is better and more pleasant to the eye.

The new menu is ok after a while, but until you get used to it it’s a little cumbersome, as it isn’t so intuitive as it should be. The buttons don’t have any writing on them and you must go through a trial and error until you really get used to it and start using it with ease.

One thing that I love about it is that you can use it as USB DAC with your computer. It also has a coax output so you could plug it in almost any system and listen to your music with it. Besides that it also has a lineout, so you could use it as a clean DAC in another system.

Listening Impressions

The tests have been done with Decware Taboo MK3Audeze LCD-X with Toxic Silver WidowBurson ConductorAudiobyte Hydra-X,  Focal Spirit Classic.

So, yes I have used it with LCD-X and I must say that this combo really impressed me.

Let’s get into some songs and see how it performs.

Andre Rieu – Granada

What struck me from the first seconds was a very spacious and holographic soundstage. The guitars and other instruments really tickled my ears, being in perfect harmony with each other, being on their own precise layer and with a lot of space between them.

Chesky Vivaldi – Allegro ( La Caccia )

Again a very large & 3D scene was presented in this song. I’ve really lost myself in the song with it and this doesn’t happen to me with any product. I loved every instrument as they had a very very good amount of detail and energy attached to it. The separation of instruments and imaging was top notch as their position was very clear. The attack of the chords was explosive and full of life. The treble is very extended without hearing any type of harshness on this song.

Apocalyptica – World Collide

The guitar from the beginning was subtle but had a very good impact and detail showing a fast and impactful bass. When the drums began there was an explosion of energy. While the passage was very crowded, the X5 did an exemplary job on not blending all the instruments together. It actually felt like it played with ease without struggling a bit.

Leonard Cohen – Here It Is

The scene was very deep and the instruments in the back showed that very well while giving a very spacious and 3d feeling. The voices were very well layered themselves, presenting a detailed and pleasant texture and timbre. Leonard’s voice was presented with accuracy, showing it’s very unique qualities, but lacking a little from the weight it has on Conductor’s DAC for example.

Mike Oldfield – No Man’s Land

It started with a very interesting bass presented very well by the FiiO X5 with a fast and controlled grip. FiiO took away the emphasis on midbass it had on older products leaving space for faster and cleaner sound. It really amazed me again how it leaves such space between layers and instruments. The guitar in the back gives you a very nice feeling leaving the impressions that you are in a very large concert hall.

Zdob si Zdub – Nistru

The details presented are amazing with X5. All the instruments have a life of their own and they are very apparent on every layer from the first row till the last one. The extension and plucks of the guitars tickled my ears again. The cymbals were very present and sparkly but sometimes a little more than they should be but I think it is the song’s fault.

Lindsey Stirling – Crystalize

The violin is just amazing & clean, sparkling with detail and life and flying with ease from one layer to another. The bass was very clean and fast with good extension and punch.

Infected Mushroom – Vicious Delicious

Let’s see how the bass really stands. Well, I think this is the best bass I have ever heard from a FiiO product as it was very clean, fast, impactful and with good extension. The energy of the song was very contagious as it had a very good PRAT that invited you to head bang.

FiiO X5 Review 0

Summary

Bass

FiiO took away from the mid bass emphasis their products usually have, leaving behind a cleaner, faster and more detailed bass but still with very good impact and extension.

Mids

I loved the instruments and voices on X5, especially the female voices that were very clean and detailed. Leonard’s voice was detailed as well and with a good texture but it would had been nice if it would have had a little more weight.

Treble

The treble on X5 is very well extended and detailed. With some recordings it might get a little tiresome after a while, as if the recording has a bright tendency, the X5 will show you that and won’t keep that hidden from you. However, I don’t find it bright, just true to the recording and unforgiving in this department.

Details

This is the most detailed FiiO I have ever heard. It really amazed me in this regard as you can hear every chord and pluck, or every instruments from an orchestra, even the ones that are more subtle.

Instrument Separation & Imaging

The X5 really astonished me in this department as well as it does a very very good job here too. I have never heard the instruments blend in the same layer, not even in the most crowded passages. The layering is very well done with a lot of air between them and every instrument.

Soundstage

The soundstage is just amazing. It just opened up my focal spirit classic as I have rarely heard it before. From the first seconds I have started listening to it I noticed the very spacious and airy presentation. The scene is very deep and wide, but the good things don’t stop here as the sound was also 3d, giving a holographic feeling to the sound. The x5 has a more spacious and holographic sound that my full blown size Burson Conductor.

Transients

One other strong point of X5 are the fast  transients, as the sounds have an exploding attack and fast decay. This leads to a fast and energetic sound.

Dynamics

I really liked how the instruments from the further layers still had life and presence, showing good dynamics.

Transparency

I feel that this is the most transparent product from FiiO and that it offers a very clean window into your music.

Neutral

FiiO took away from the warmer color of their first products, giving a more neutral presentation that is more suitable and easier to match with a larger variety of products.

FiiO X5 Review (1)

Conclusions

FiiO did an excellent job with the X5 stepping into an upper layer of this market. This is by far the best product they ever made, being a huge step forward from X3.  FiiO is my first recommendation when I am talking with a friend that wants to get into this hobby as it is an excellent start with decent performance and all that at a normal price.

Everyone who bought a product from FiiO was very pleased by it, but never amazed by it.

I have lured some friends to listen to X5 + Focal Spirit Classic at work and from the first 5 seconds I have read  the astonishment and pleasure on their faces. One of them said that it was the clearest sound he ever heard ( on Vivaldi ) and that he felt like in the concert hall.

I was trying to concentrate at work on a problem and I lost myself into a song with the X5 and Spirit Classic. This never happened to me with E17. Ok, don’t get me wrong, as E17 is very good for it’s price and still enjoyable, but not at this level, as the X5 is in a total different league, getting into enthusiast’s department.

I think that the X5 has a very transparent sound that opens a clean window into your music.

It really impressed me with both LCD-X and Focal Spirit Classic as it was a wonderful match for both. Yes, it can drive LCD-X and I never felt it was underpowered with it. Of course you could get better amplification, but I found X5 to be sufficient for my needs with the LCD-X.

Focal Spirit Classic really opened up with it, offering one of the best soundstage I have ever heard from those headphones.

It wasn’t so good with LCD-3 and HD800 as these headphones need more power, but I still think that it offers a very good and clean amplification section.

This is a very exciting period we live in. I see progress everywhere, and yes, even in audio. A lot of very nice products are rising,  the X5 being one of them, marking the progress in this domain.

Pros

  • Very good build quality and appealing design
  • Good and clean amplification
  • Very good transparency
  • Neutral presentation
  • Fast transients with exploding attack and fast decay
  • Very good details
  • Good dynamics
  • Excellent & holographic soundstage
  • Excellent instrument separation and imaging
  • Energetic sound with good PRAT
  • You can use it as USB DAC
  • Has Coax out and lineout so you can use it easily in other systems
  • Very good price (350 EUR) / performance ratio
  • It supports all important file types

Cons

  • Cumbersome user experience until you get used to it
  • Unmarked buttons
  • No internal storage

  1. Great review, thanks!

  2. Thank you Nick!

  3. Well done again . I have Focal S.C. and i will grab one X5 for sure 🙂 ( already have x3 ) . Can’t wait to pair x5 with FSC 🙂

    1. Thank you Bennet. I think you will not regret it. Waiting for your impressions 🙂

  4. I bought a Pono, because by the time I buy 128gig of MicroSD card it blows the price of this baby out of the room.

  5. I have heard about Pono before. It seems interesting, but they didn’t convince me with their marketing yet. They want to impress through their marketing as I haven’t been impressed by it’s specs. Considering it’s 400$ I don’t think it’s much cheaper than FiiO x5 which is 480$. It is true that adding some storage cards will increase the price difference. However, while I am curious about pono, I seriously doubt it it would be better than x5 or in the same category 🙂 . If I have the chance, I will listen to it too.

  6. Thank you very much for this easy-to-understand and clear review!
I want to replace my actual Cowon X7 // Shure SE535 (very practical to use aboard the train).
    I hesitate between IBasso DX50 – Fiio X5 and Astell&Kern AK100-MkII.
I think I’ll keep the Shure (love the sound) and go for the X5 and perhaps wait for a price fall of the new Shure SE846…
Thank you again for your site and this review!

    1. Thank you Olivier and glad to be of service.

Waiting for your impressions after you get the FiiO.

      Cheers,

      Dan

      1. With great pleasure, Dan!
The only thing still holding me is your remark : “Cumbersome user experience” :-/
Are the menus and commands so unconfortable ?

        Kind regards;
        Olivier

  7. I am just not sure how to get out the 192kHz/24bit resolution from this coaxial dogital output. As far as I know, optical and coaxial cables can transport max 96/24 digital signals. The hires 192/24 signal can be transported only by USB or HDMI (AV). Or am I wrong? I would like to use this FIIO instead of PC in my HIFI system. Please advise… 🙂

    1. I think that you are safe and that spdif doesn’t have a designated bitrate. If the device can handle it there should be no problem. For example chord hugo has 384 kHz / 24 bit on spdif.

  8. Thank you for your response. I was not sure because the operating manual of my other hifi equipment says that the connection through the connectors COAX. and OPT. does not allow the transmission of higher resolution than 96kHz/24bit. Maybe it’s specific for each device. Thanks a lot…Otto

  9. We are excited about getting the FiiO X5 so that we can try it on our Chord Hugo. This looks like it could be the ideal transport for it but only time will tell! 🙂 I will be hooking it up as soon as we receive it. Shame it won’t output DSD though.

    1. From what I have read, X5 will have dsd support with a firmware upgrade in the future. However, DSD is too rare now to be a big deal. Didn’t find a dsd song to sound better than a good pcm flac.

  10. Im loving my X5 with my Shure SE 846s. However, one question i would like answering is : when playing back music should i have the setting on STORAGE or DAC ?
    Cheers Colin

    1. Hello Colin,

The storage/dac option is to be used when connected to the computer. Storage will let you use it in storage mode, and DAC will let you use it as an external DAC with your computer.

      Cheers,

      Dan

  11. Thanks very much for your review of the FiiO X5. I have two portable hard drives with a lot of WAV files on one and FLAC files on the other. The drives are 500 GB and 1 TB in capacity and need a powered USB port to run; i.e. no separate power pack with either. Is the USB port in the X5 powered, and is the X5 capable of handling those large capacities or will it need the firmware upgrades referred to in the specifications – which, presumably, are yet to appear?

I also read somewhere that the handling of ‘gapless’ material (where a piece of music extends across two or more files without a break) isn’t handled as well on the X5 as it is on the X3. I find that hard to believe, since the X5 is the later product. What did you think about that or didn’t you try it?

I also have the X3 and like it very much but realise it will not.accept those drives mentioned above. Its gapless playback is, however, excellent.

    1. The X5 handles gapless but not very smoothly, i heard it still has issues with it, it should be fixed in future firmware upgrades.
About your first question, i can’t be sure, but i doubt the X5 can power an external HD, it would drain your battery in no time…

I just ordered the X5 today, can’t wait to receive it and fuel it with my Flac HD microSDs : ))))

      1. Well, I don’t think an external HDD will work with x5 because of 2 reasons : power and drivers.

  12. Thanks for your comments to my query. I admit I’m really surprised about the gapless playback being less than ideal on the X5. In my opinion, it is truly excellent on the X3. I ripped a CD that has ten continuous tracks to FLAC, with all sorts of strange things going on between some of the tracks, and using high quality headphones, I feel that the X3 plays those files truly gaplessly. There is not the faintest sign of a break anywhere. Very satisfying.

I certainly agree that continually running a hard drive off batteries would soon discharge them so running a player off the mains would seem to be a must under such circumstances. I admit I hadn’t thought of a driver issue. Mind you, that could be part of the firmware surely.

Hi, thanks for your insightful review; I’ve got a pair on Sennheiser HD650 on its way, would X5 do a good job for amplifying them ? and if only “good but not great”, would Burson HA-160 be a best option or I should save some money for the Soloist ?

    Thanks,
    Costin

    1. Hi Costin,

I don’t think the X5 would do the best job amplifying hd650. HA-160 would do a good job with hd650 but if I could, I would wait and get the soloist, as they scale even further with it and soloist is more future proof as it sounded great with every headphone I plugged into it.

      Cheers,

      Dan

  14. What is the considered the better choice for Audeze lcd 2(Lcd-x in the future) and Focal Spirit Classic headphones?
Burson Solist with Fiio x5 as dac or Burson Conductor or maibe Naim Dac v1

    1. Naim DAC-V1 has some problems driving LCD-2 properly. As dac it is very good, but the amplification section is not that powerful. I think it could handle LCD-X, but I have never tried it with Naim to be sure. Soloist is a great amp, but you have to find a good cable from X5 to Soloist and that could be a little hard, but in the end doable, and you will also have a portable unit, which is good.

Burson Conductor has a good DAC but it is kind out-dated and I would go for something else as DAC right now. Don’t get me wrong, it has a good dac but you have to get a good usb interface to get the most out of it, and with the money difference you could go directly and buy a soloist and a chord hugo as dac.

I have a new product fro Audiobyte, named the Black Dragon. I think it will be superior to Conductor as DAC.

I will write a review of it soon.

  15. After reading the main X5 thread over at Head-Fi, I’ve been trying to decide whether to pick one up to replace my iPhone 4. This review made my decision and it should be arriving tomorrow. Thanks for the brilliant review.
P.S. Love the theme – you have good taste 😉

    1. Thank you for reading and for your kind words . I am glad I helped in your decision and I am quite confident you will be glad with it.

  16. I had FiiO X5 for 2 weeks. During this time I have encountered numerous problems with this player while I was just trying to make this thing work while following the brief operation manual to the letter. I was completely shocked as nobody from the audiophiles writing for major and established reviewing sites on-line did not highlight any important issues that ordinary users seem to be able to identify pretty early after this delayed release.
After first day I realised that nothing works “outside of the box” in terms of X5. My problems with formatting a brand new micro SD card (SanDisk ultra, 64GB, XC, I) left me with high levels of frustration and and technically speaking useless SD Card thst is not given you for free! After formatting this card in X5 I could not write or read/ delete any data any longer. I tried to format my next SD card (same manufacturer and specification which is also recommended by FiiO for safe use) using external dedicated software (SD Fotmatter v4.0) under Win 7 (64bits). FiiO x5 either could not see some files (about 50% of FLAC files!?). I followed closely all the FAQa and advice from supplier and FiiOs website including using the right and up to date software (drivers and recent firmware 2.0). At the end X5 started to freeze when I was trying to access newly copied good quality flac or hi res mp3 from my collection. How do I know that my files were reliable ? I know it because I have been using JRiver Media Center 19 for the last 4 weeks and played them all without any problems including via…same X5!
After several days of endless trials I must admit that the only mode that was fully supported by this late release is DAC mode. In that mode any type of hi res file were handled by X5 flawlessly. It looks like FiiO has still some serious work to do to improve their clearly prematurely released product that on the other hand could aspire to join the best in its league easily considering the quality of music it is capable producing, if you only manage to make X5 work. I had to return this product.
Summary of issues to be aware of :
    – flowed prematurely released firmware with updates that seem to be improving …nothing (just look how often it is being upgraded since its release),
    – very annoying access to SD Cards slots / no internal memory, support even for recommended micro SD cards seams very patchy,
    – problems with playback of some seamless flac files,
    – counterintuitive solutions in its UI, most people apparently can get used to it pretty quickly (i did), but it would be nice to see functions that make access to files easy and most important functions easy,
    – unmarked buttons in front of the device to access very important functions,
    – can easily stop playing music, skip the track or rewind accidentally when in your pocket in a playback mode,
    – pretty heavy, but it can also can be an advantage as it is also very solid therefore doesn’t look or feel cheap at any point,
    Pros:
    – outstanding quality of music (light, spacious, neutral, rich – on my Sennheiser’s Momentum (no need for any amps due to the spec of Momentum, Impedance 18 Ω) , see other reviews for other peoples experiences (pretty similar),
    – price of this player (considering that its rivals are in 10 x more expensive “league”)
    – good quality materials, nice finish,

    1. Just one more piece of information before I get eaten alive here hehe People who sold me X5 here in the UK (very nice people on the other hand) told me eventually, that “only” 10 % of all the FiiOs that they managed to sell from this first delayed batch were returned to them. O n l y 10 % ???
I think it was unfair to release such an unfinished product and think that people will do the necessary testing for them. Shame on FiiO as they are known to release many very good quality product in the past.

      1. Hello Marcin,

I happen to know the fiio dealer in Romania. From what they told me they didn’t have such problems at all. Will come back with more info on this.

      2. I have talked with them. They have sold hundreds of fiios. Only 2 prducts had problems: an e17 which was dead on arrival an one e10 which had un unfunctional led. No broken x5 yet.

      3. My X5 works fine, with two of the same cards do you used. Like another poster, I suspect you may have fake cards. Actually, mine works better than fine. I find this to be a fantastic piece of equipment, despite some foibles such as a difficult to navigate interface. What’s more, it gets better with each firmware revision.

    2. Hello Marcin,

Thank you for your impressions. Besides the slightly non intuitive user interface and unmarked buttons which took some getting used too, I didn’t find any big problems with the X5. For example never found flac problems like you. The sd cards slots inputs weren’t the easiest to get to, but I only used them once to put my music there.
Maybe I am less pretentious in these areas, as I found the pros much more impressive and important.

      Cheers,

      Dan

    3. Obviously you have bought some non-genuine sd cards with fake capacity, look again at your problems with your cards mate.

  17. Have just received my Fiio X5 & my first impression is that it is a great product. I’m using it with Grado RS1s & the sound is fantastic, detailed, wonderful bass, great with voice… Took a fair amount of time to load 2 cards to the max, but then it is a lot of data. Found using the file system fine from my pc, no issues. For the price the sound is exceptional, haven’t tried it as a DAC yet.

    1. Congrats on the purchase, Garet!

  18. Please anyone can confirm FiiO X5 used in DAC mode with Mac OSX 10.9 and selected as main system audio output device – is it possible to adjust the volume with volume control keys on the Mac keyboard?

  19. Great review! Makes me rethink my headphone options. I would appreciate your help on this:
I’ve had the X5 in my possession for two weeks and before that, my setup was iPod 120GB 6th gen + BeyerDynamic DT-1350s. The main reason for picking the 1350s was isolation, but its sound stage isn’t very impressive. I clearly notice much improvement with the X5 over the iPod, but now that I have the X5 I am looking to improve the headphones.
So: I can order a new Focal Spirit Classic for 299 and it’s tempting when reading your review above. My question is: will I like it (coming from DT-1350’s) and will it improve sound stage or other aspects?
    Thanks!

I want to try the X5 to replace my IPod 160gb. I manage my music on a Dell desktop using I Tunes, and my library is 70:30 split of compressed files and Apple Lossless. I am prepared to reload my older CDs to get them into lossless format if necessary. Will I encounter any problems loading my library onto the SD cards that the X5 uses. Am I wasting the potential of the X5 by transferring my existing compressed files in their present form. All my recent cd purchases have been loaded in Lossless so presumably this can be transferred in their present form, or do they need to be converted into another format. I have read comments suggesting that having to drag and drop files onto the SD cards is a pain. Is this just an issue of how long it takes to do this, or are there more serious problems? I have limited technical understanding so I need a fairly simple method of doing this. My objective is to have my large library in a portable hi resolution device. Thanks.

    1. Hello Richard,

There should be no problem if you have access to the files & folders you want to copy on the sd cards. You just have to copy them somehow on the sd cards.

Beware that there are very slow sd cards out there, so be careful what you get first.

Then, if your laptop has a sd card reader, you could insert the micro sd cards into the laptop (with an adapter from micro to normal sd card). This should be faster than using the sd cards from X5 with the usb cable.

Also format the sd cards with the largest cluster size.

X5 knows all the important file formats. You shouldn’t worry.

      Cheers,

      Dan

  21. Help Help Help!!!
I am formatting my two 128gb cards as per instruction on the device then plugging it into my IMac. Sometimes it just displays one of the drives on the desktop and other times it shows both. Whatever the case, whenever I try to drag and drop files into either drive it eventually states that it will take about 15 days to transfer and about two hours later the whole transfer just crashes!
    What can I do?

    1. Hey Ben,

What is the cumulative size of the files / folders you drag and drop ? Also, what is the speed of the sd card? Some cards are real slow. I have no experience with apple products, so I cannot tell you how to do that.

However you could insert the micro sd cards directly into your / someone else’s laptop (with an adapter). It should be faster than through the X5 connected on the usb port.

For faster speed you should also format the sd cards with the largest cluster size possible.

      Cheers,

      Dan

  22. Much appreciated review, thanks!

  23. Like your reviews on FiiO X5 and X3 and I’m curious what you think about the X1…

    1. Hey Frank,

Thank you. I’ve already written the review. I have to take the pictures and will post it these days.

The conclusion is that I love it. It’s awesome for the price. In some cases I liked it more than X5 as it has a fuller body sound with more sub bass. It doesn’t have the details or soundstage x5 has, but it is more fun sometimes.

      Cheers,

      Dan

      1. Hey Dan,

        thanks for the quick reply!

Hm… sounds like I have to wait for an X4 with the details and soundstage of the X5 and the case of the X1 preferably for half the price of the X5 🙂 But in the meantime I might go for the X1, the X5 is too bulky in my opinion (except if someone also wants to use it for self-defense…)

        Cheers from Switzerland
        Frank

  24. Got the X5, with Shure SE846 … Amazing soundstage, the voices are clear crisp, soundstage open and precise, bass is full and solid. The product is built like a tank, and if you don’t mind that, it is a great performer. I use it both as a USB-DAC and a portable HD player. What it looses because of weight and size it gains in versatility as I do not have to fiddle with iPhone, connections and other gimmicks. Also I can play my FLAC’s directly from the player and other music from iTunes, by a switch of a button. While in DAC mode as it charges, and is always available with 100% charge when on the move. Quite impressed. To notch up the sound quality, one would have to double / triple the budget and make some compromise on versatility.
    Enjoy !!

  25. Hi Dan,

I’m interested in the X5 as a digital file transport paired with the new RAL KEB02iP DAC / headphone amplifier & recabled Shure SRH1540. I’m pretty new to DAP’s & have only flirted with iPods. I was wondering if you are able to get a clean digital output from the X5 pre internal DAC & amp?
    Thanks
    Matt

    1. Hello Matt,

Sorry for the long delay. X5 does have a coaxial digital output.

      Cheers,

      Dan

    2. Matt: Feed that digital out into a good DAC and the X5 becomes a ‘perfect’ digital source. I can’t fault it played through my Benchmark DAC2.

  26. i would like to use the, FiiO X5, as my car player.
my car has a usb input and will probably only accept 16 bit outputs similar to my ipod.
i want the unit to start and stop and charge when car is running, thus usb works well, for that, with my ipod now.
i store most of my files in apple lossless format since that is what apple and i can live with as of now.
mp3 are unacceptable. i have almost 2tb of music, and maybe 100 mp3s, in 200000 files or more.
much of my library is 24bit and keeping multiple copies is a major pain, so i typically don’t, and so the ipod gets 24bit music now.

    so questions are:
if using usb out, will 24b files play in my car? is there a way to force 24b files to output as 16b over usb.
will unit sense usb power off and stop playing while i exit car and start again when restarting car.
i play files randomly so interface to player is immaterial.

  27. For the FIIO and other future devices, What is the best software or format to burn my CD collection in on my hard drive? I am looking to retain the best sampling to my hard drive as I have a Tera Byte Hard Drive, So storage space is not a problem. Thank you, I ll check at my Email and on this web.

    1. Hello Peter,

I think Exact Audio Copy is pretty good:

I was going to recommend Exact Audio Copy too. I have found it excellent in every way and I use it for creating both FLAC and WAV files.
